Vapnö kyrka is situated up on a hill with a delightful view over the Vapnödalen valley. It is not known from which century the oldest parts of the church date.

There is an old, persistent tradition telling that Märta Ulfsdotter, daughter of Saint Birgitta, was involved in selecting the site for the building of the church. There is nothing that supports this theory, but Märta did live at Vapnö gods (Vapnö manor/estate) between 1340 and 1350.
