Ljungby kyrka stands in the small church village of Ljungby in Halland. Its predecessor may have dated from as early as 1100–1200, but that medieval building was destroyed by fire on 6 July 1869, leading to the construction of the present church.

The old Ljungby church had a narrower chancel and apse, with a porch on the south side and an entrance to the north. By the late 1600s a tower had been added at the west gable, built on masonry as wide as the nave, and the Hällerup estate family kept a burial chamber there. The church was renovated several times during the 1700s and again in 1813, and in 1850 the nave was extended into the tower's ground floor after the burial vault was emptied. A first organ was installed in 1854. The building was lost in the fire of 1869.

On the same site a new church was built in neoclassical style, consecrated on 12 September 1875 by Bishop Gustaf Daniel Björck. The interior was not painted until 1885, and the exterior was rendered and whitewashed in 1887. Further changes came in 1928, when the interior was repainted, a wooden partition was inserted between sacristy and chancel, and the gilded cross that had stood on the altar was moved to the sacristy. In its place came the current altarpiece, a crucifix flanked by two kneeling angels.

A thorough restoration in 1953 transformed the nave: the original three-part timber ceiling was replaced with a rendered masonry barrel vault of cloisonné construction, and the opening to the sacristy behind the altar was walled up, enclosing that space fully. Yngve Lundström carried out decorative ceiling paintings and marbled the pew ends during this work. External renovations followed in 1959 and 1969.

Among the church's furnishings is a font of Gotland limestone dating from the 1200s, its bowl and shaft surviving from the medieval church, though the foot was damaged in the 1869 fire and replaced with a new one in 1955. A pewter christening dish from the 1600s also survives. The altarpiece itself, in neoclassical style from 1873, is framed by plain columns beneath a triangular pediment; the crucifix and kneeling angels now set between the columns were carved by Axel Andersson of Morup in 1928, replacing the earlier gilded cross.

Fragments rescued from the old church, including pieces of its altarpiece, pulpit and memorial tablets, were later combined with new work by Andersson and conservator Carl Otto Svensson in 1933 to form two epitaph-like panels that now hang on the nave wall. A dated chest from 1623, salvaged from the medieval building, also remains. The church's organ history includes an instrument built by Salomon Molander in 1881, later replaced in 1976 by a new organ from Tostareds Kyrkorgelfabrik.
