The previous 19th-century church had burnt down four years earlier. That church, in turn, had replaced a wooden church from 1671. The new church in Kalv was built to designs by Carl Crispin, son of the well-known church architect Adrian Crispin Peterson.
From the earlier churches, the 13th-century font and wooden sculptures from the 17th century have been preserved. These adorn the south wall.
At the back of the church there is also a work by Eva Spångberg, depicting the angel Gabriel and Mary.
The church has been renovated on several occasions. The most recent was in 2002, when Kalv received a church adapted to meet the worship and parish life of the 21st century.
