S:t Laurentii kyrka, Falkenberg's old town church, was probably built during the 14th century. This is attested to by its metre-thick walls. On the south façade there are traces of the entrance that was walled up in 1903.

History

The nave was extended in the late medieval period and given a straight chancel end to the east with a window that, having been walled up, was reopened in 1954. The church was burned during the Northern Seven Years' War (1563-1570). In 1586 the parishioners were granted permission to use the Crown's customs duties and excise taxes in Falkenberg to rebuild it. A major renovation was carried out in 1668. The interior ceiling was vaulted in 1739. The tower was originally made of wood but was replaced in 1787 by today's stone tower with its characteristic copper dome and weathervane. The church porch was added the same year.

The church was abandoned in 1892 when a new church for the town was inaugurated. However, instead of being demolished, the building was used as a gymnasium for the school. It was also used for concerts, lectures and film screenings, as well as for air rifle shooting. When the school built a new gymnasium in 1922, the wall bars and other gymnastic equipment were removed, and it was decided to restore the church. The architect for the restoration, which took place between 1925 and 1928, was Hakon Ahlberg, and the reinauguration took place in 1928. The church received new pew furnishings, an altar and an altar rail. Following a fundraising campaign initiated by Falkenbergs Tidning, church bells were acquired in 1935. During the 1941 renovation, led by Harald Wadsjö, the church received a new colour scheme and a new pulpit.
