Ny kyrka stands on a headland jutting into Lake Nysockensjön in western Värmland, its rectangular nave, steep roof and tall west tower spire visible from across the water. During summer, worshippers reportedly still arrive by an old church boat dated 1883.

The present church was built between 1887 and 1889 a short distance east of the old churchyard, to designs by architect Agi Lindegren. It was constructed in Neo-Gothic style using red facade brick, with pointed-arch windows, external buttresses and a slender tower spire; according to Wikipedia it was consecrated on 20 July 1890 and rests on a granite plinth, with a pointed wooden vault over the nave and plastered brick vaulting over the chancel and apse.

A parish is thought to have existed at Ny since the 1200s, with medieval documentary references, though the exact age of the earlier wooden church that once stood on the site is unknown. Sources differ slightly on that earlier building's history: one account describes it simply as an old wooden church of unknown age, demolished in 1889, while Wikipedia gives a fuller account, noting the medieval timber church was lengthened in the mid-1600s and enlarged into a cruciform church in 1756, remaining in use until it was pulled down in 1889. Its former site within the churchyard is marked by a memorial stone raised in 1896.

Inside, the church has seen restoration changes during the twentieth century. The altar cross and pulpit that had been part of the new church were removed, and furnishings from the earlier church dating to the mid-1700s were reinstated in their place, with other fittings adapted to match. Three chancel windows have also been bricked up over the years.

The church's organ has its own history: an eight-stop instrument was built in 1898 by E A Setterquist and Son, and this was later replaced in 1945 by a pneumatic organ built by Olof Hammarberg of Gothenburg, which included a register swell.
