Flistads kyrka stands beside Lake Östen in Västergötland, close to the prehistoric burial mound known as Kung Ranes hög. Its oldest walls date from the 1100s or early 1200s, making it one of the older parish churches in the Skara diocese.

The church's earliest form was a stone building typical of the region, and substantial sections of its walls survive within the western part of the present nave. An eastward extension to the chancel, identifiable by its narrower walls, was carried out in 1688, and later in the 18th century the original apsed chancel was replaced with a chancel of the same width as the nave, giving the building much of its current character. A lightning strike caused a fire in 1706, after which the church was rebuilt with a tower replacing the earlier bell frame; both bells were subsequently recast, and the larger bell again in 1853.

The interior is notable for its 18th-century decoration. The richly painted ceiling vault, completed in 1747 by Lars Hasselbom (with restoration work in 1963), shows the Apostles' Creed around the border and angels at the centre; Hasselbom is also credited with painting the pew doors. Sources differ slightly on the date of this ceiling painting, with one account giving 1759. The altarpiece, a depiction of Christ by an unknown artist, is thought to date from the 1700s; an earlier altarpiece showing the crucified Christ was moved to the south wall of the chancel in 1983. Two 18th-century paintings on the north chancel wall, a portrait of a Dr Axel Luth and a scene of the conversion of Paul, were donated by the Luth family.

Among the furnishings, a square, richly carved sandstone font from the early 1200s is a rare survival from the church's earliest period, alongside a wooden font from 1693. The pulpit, originally sited in the chancel, was moved to the nave during restoration work of 1939–1941, a project that also saw the church's first organ installed, new sacristy cupboards, altered doorways and windows, and a rebuilt porch. A further extension to the porch, including a small pantry and accessible facilities, was completed in 2018.

The church's pneumatic pipe organ was built in 1939 by H. Nordfors & Co of Lidköping and retuned by the same firm in 1962.
