Hassle kyrka stands on a gravel ridge at Nolhassle, roughly ten kilometres north-east of Mariestad. It is the third church known to have occupied this site, replacing a medieval building dedicated to Saint Catherine that was demolished in 1878.

The present church was built in 1878–1879 to designs by the architect Albert Törnqvist, replacing an earlier building from the mid-1700s that had itself succeeded the medieval church. Unusually, the church is orientated the opposite way to most Swedish churches, with its tower to the east and chancel to the west; a five-sided sacristy adjoins the chancel on its western side. The walls are of roughcast natural stone and granite, the roof is slate, and the spire is clad in sheet metal and topped with a cross on an orb.

Sources describe the building style variously as romanesque in character, with a shingled and tarred roof on the earlier structure, though the surviving building dates from the 1870s rebuilding.

The font, carved from Gotland limestone, dates from around 1200 and survives from one of the earlier churches on the site; it has an oak lid added in the 1500s. The pulpit is contemporary with the present church, built in the late 1870s.

The altarpiece, painted in 1880 by Adelaide Leuhusen, depicts Christ with the children. The current organ was built by E.A. Setterquist & Son and installed during renovations in 1922–1923, though its facade is thought to come from an earlier organ built in 1844 by Johan Nikolaus Söderling of Gothenburg.

Three chandeliers dating from the 1700s and 1800s hang in the church, and there are gravestones and memorial hatchments (huvudbanér) associated with members of the Falkenberg family, whose ancestor Conrad von Falkenberg of Börstorp is recorded as having built a stone burial chapel on the east side of an earlier church in 1652.
