Vollsjö kyrka, standing about a kilometre outside Vollsjö in Skåne, began life as a small chapel around 1200, or perhaps as early as the late 1100s. This Romanesque church has since grown and changed considerably while retaining several medieval treasures.

The original flat timber ceiling was replaced with vaulting in the 1400s, the same period from which the church's crucifix dates. Records suggest the chapel later fell into disrepair: a document from 1550 describes accusations against a Fru Anna of Vollsjö manor, who was said to have let the neighbouring rectory decay and planted a cabbage patch in its place. She countered that no priest or rectory had ever actually stood at Vollsjö chapel, and maintained that she had carefully looked after and repaired the long-neglected building.

Inside, near the entrance, visitors can see a Renaissance gravestone from the 1500s bearing a near life-size carved skeleton, a memento mori marking the grave of Anne Lang, widow of Niels Brahe and owner of Vollsjö manor.

The church's present appearance owes much to the 1860s, when the tower was rebuilt and north and south transepts were added; the Wikipedia source credits the architect Johan Fredrik Åbom with these designs. A sandstone font from the medieval period survives, along with the fifteenth-century crucifix, which was removed to the Historical Museum in Lund in 1908 before being returned to the church in the mid-1970s.

The gilded Baroque altar cabinet dates from the 1600s and features carved figures of Mary and the Christ child alongside a saint, possibly Francis. According to local sources, it was given to the church in the mid-1950s by a Mr Nilsson, a company director who had purchased it in Venice; the cabinet was originally used to store bread and wine for the sacrament.

A woven altar carpet by the textile artist Agda Österberg, created in Varnhem in 1964, depicts the ages of human life, from youth to old age; one of her other carpets is said to have been displayed at the Waldorf Astoria in New York during the 1930s. The two church bells are older still, the smaller dating from the early 1500s and the larger from 1634. The church also has a literary connection, appearing in Fritjof Nilsson Piraten's novel "Bombi Bitt och jag" and its film adaptation.
