Vetlanda kyrka stands at the heart of the town, close to houses and green space alike. A church has occupied this site since the Middle Ages, though the building visitors see today is largely the product of later rebuilding.

The first church on this site was raised in the 1100s. Little is known about that early building, though sources note it underwent renovation and rebuilding at various points, with one account referring to work in the 1670s and another describing the medieval church as having been replaced by a new one in 1724, itself demolished in 1797. Given these differing accounts, the precise sequence of early buildings is uncertain.

The church seen today was built between 1797 and 1803, to designs associated with the Överintendentsämbetet (the royal office of works), and was consecrated in 1803. During construction, in 1800, the partly finished tower was damaged by a lightning strike. A new spire and tower clock were added in 1871.

The most significant transformation came in 1903–1904, when the building was given its present character. The nave was raised in the centre with a clerestory storey, and the church was reordered internally to become a three-aisled basilica, with massive pillars and arches running in two parallel rows down the centre. A new sacristy and new entrances were also added at this time. The walls above the side aisles and the chancel arch were decorated with frescoes by the church painter Ludvig Frid, bringing colour and life into what had previously been a plainer, whitewashed interior.

Among the furnishings, a font has been dated to the 1100s and attributed to a carver known as Bestiarius, making it one of the oldest surviving objects associated with the site. A crucifix said to date from the 1300s and an altarpiece depicting Christ in Gethsemane, painted in 1816 by Johan Gustaf Sandberg, are also part of the church's collection, along with a pulpit from 1954 with reliefs by Maj Starck.

The church has had several organs over the years, reflecting changing musical tastes and technology, culminating in an instrument built in 1980 whose case incorporates elements from earlier organs dating back to 1905 and 1947.
