Råda kyrka stands on the edge of Lidköping in Västra Götaland. Its origins reach back to the 1100s, though archaeological evidence suggests an even earlier wooden church may have preceded the stone building that visitors see today.

The oldest surviving fabric is the western wall, pierced by a narrow and unusually shaped doorway dating from the church's first construction in the 1100s. The cylindrical font, plain and without decoration, is also thought to belong to this early period. The eastern end of the church, with its straight-ended chancel and pointed-arch windows, was rebuilt in the 1200s. Further additions followed in the 1400s, when a west tower, porch and sacristy were added and the original flat timber ceiling was replaced by the vaults still in place today. The paintings decorating those vaults were added in 1632.

A runestone, believed to date from around the year 1000, is set into the wall of the porch. Fragments of earlier, pre-Romanesque grave monuments of the so-called Eskilstuna type have also been found built into the church's masonry, suggesting that Råda held some special status as a cult site alongside the nearby Husaby church, ahead of its formal establishment as a parish church.

According to Wikipedia, the church's tall spire, once a landmark for sailors on Lake Kinneviken, was destroyed by lightning in 1874. It was replaced by a lower structure until a new spire in an older style was built in 1927.

Archaeological excavations carried out from the 1980s onwards, prompted by the discovery of Viking Age pottery fragments during a cemetery extension, uncovered extensive evidence of settlement on the site. Finds ranged from the time of Christ up to the 1400s, including indications that the area was inhabited as early as the 800s and had once been the site of a magnate's farmstead with wide-ranging trade contacts. Later excavations in the 1990s explored the continuity of settlement and the relationship between the dwelling site and the church at the time Christianity was adopted, and suggested that the present stone church likely had a wooden stave church as its predecessor.

The surrounding landscape, including the Lunnelid nature reserve and a heritage trail, is noted for its cultural and natural interest, with a viewpoint overlooking Kinneviken and the Kinnekulle plateau.
