Övraby kyrka is one of the best-known and most picturesquely sited churches on Österlen, in Skåne. This modest rural church has attracted attention chiefly for its unusually early origins and the survival of remarkable medieval wall paintings.

The church was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, with an apse, chancel and nave. Some historians date its construction, roof structure and the earliest paintings in the apse to the mid-1100s, which would make it one of the oldest churches in the Nordic region, though this early dating is not universally agreed. The evidence cited includes the unusual roof-truss design, lacking a collar beam, and the archaic character of the apse paintings.

In the 15th century the church was substantially altered: vaulting was added, a porch was built on the north side, and the tower was constructed, giving the building much of its present external appearance.

The apse contains wall paintings dated by most accounts to the later 12th century, though some researchers argue for an earlier, mid-century date, which would place them among the oldest surviving church paintings in the Nordic countries. The composition centres on Christ enthroned in majesty, surrounded by symbols of the apostles, with the apostles themselves and saints depicted further down, and a small Romanesque window incorporated into the scheme. The paintings were plastered over for a long period before being uncovered and restored in the early 20th century, in a restoration later criticised as not entirely professionally carried out.

A major restoration in 1906, overseen by the architect Theodor Wåhlin, gave the chancel a flat ceiling and added a sacristy. The older fittings were removed and replaced with new woodwork in varnished oak, and the medieval altar was taken out and replaced by the present one; wall decoration and painted glass were also introduced at this time.

Among the furnishings, the pulpit is dated to 1602 and the altarpiece to the late 17th century. The font, its candlestick and a wooden series pastorum board were made by the Halland craftsman Erik Nilsson. The current organ, of unknown origin with an older case, was moved to Övraby in 1969 from the German Church (Tyska kyrkan) in Malmö, replacing earlier instruments built in 1886 and 1909.
