The original church was in all likelihood built in the 1100s–1200s in connection with the introduction of Christianity, on a pre-Christian cult site. In 1884 the old church was demolished, and the new one was built, mainly during that year, right next to where the old church had stood. The hourglass and the votive ship are examples of objects from the old church that have been preserved and can be seen in Ölmevalla church today. The font from the old church is exhibited at the Statens Historiska Museum (Swedish History Museum) as a fine example of ecclesiastical art from the Baroque period. The hexagonal baptismal basin is still used in Ölmevalla church today. The church has two organs: a 23-stop Hammarberg organ from 1971, and a four-stop Magnusson organ from 1988.
