In 1762 a simple timber church was built on the shore of Gäutajaure. After a chequered history - including use as a barn - it was returned to its original site at the so-called Gamla Kyrknäset (Old Church Point), 5 km east of the present-day church. It was reconsecrated in 1971. On the night of 1 October 1986 the church burned down. It was subsequently rebuilt and reconsecrated on 8 July 1991.
From this church comes Tärna parish's oldest treasure, the old church bell from 1702, which was returned to the chapel at Gamla Kyrknäset in 1984. It is one of the few church bells cast during the years of the Great Northern War. It bears the inscription:
"Lycksella kiörkio klåcka giort uti kånung Carl den 12 tes segersamma regering tid A 1702. Gutin i Stockholm af Ionas Wulfbein. Deo Gloria in Excelsis." It was donated by Lycksele parish in the mid-1780s.
