The original timber chapel was consecrated in September 1960. It had an unusual design, with the worship space forming the base of a pyramid-shaped bell tower. Over the following decades the building suffered from damp damage, and by the 2010s it was judged to be beyond reasonable repair.
The old chapel was demolished in 2017, and a new chapel was built on the site to replace it. The new building was consecrated on Epiphany, 6 January 2018, by Bishop Eva Nordung Byström, with reports of a well-attended service marking the occasion.
Högvålens kapell belongs to Tännäs-Ljusnedals församling within the Diocese of Härnösand. Its remote setting in the Härjedalen mountains, rather than any single treasured object or ancient feature, is what gives the chapel its particular character and its claim to fame as one of the highest places of worship in the region.
