Grönahögs kyrka

Grönahögs kyrka is a small white timber church in the southern part of Ulricehamn municipality, Västra Götaland. Built in 1662 on the site of an earlier medieval church, it stands as a modest but historically layered example of rural Swedish church building.

The present timber church was built in 1662, replacing a medieval predecessor that had stood on the same spot. Its broad west tower, with distinctive outward-angled lower walls sometimes described as a "skirt", was added at the end of the eighteenth century, while the vaulted ceiling followed in 1795 and the three-sided chancel was extended eastward in 1827.

The building is of horizontal log construction, with white-painted board panelling outside and rounded window openings. Roofs are shingled, apart from the tower's dark-painted sheet metal covering. Inside, the church has undergone several changes of decoration: repainted in 1829, later panelled over in 1884 (hiding earlier wall paintings), and then substantially reworked in 1912 and again in 1928.

The most striking decorative work dates from 1928, when the interior was renovated under Borås builders Albin and Carl Wilhelm Gustafsson, and the well-known Borås artist John Hedaeus (referred to in sources as Hedæus) painted the gallery front and the barrel-vaulted ceiling. The church's colourful appearance today owes much to this scheme.

Among the furnishings, the font is the oldest surviving object, a plain sandstone piece in two parts, generally dated to around 1200 (with one source citing the twelfth century). After long standing outdoors, it was restored and reconsecrated in 1956. The current altarpiece, an oil painting of the Virgin and Child, was installed in 1913, the work of the artist W. Ljungnér.

The church has had a series of organs: an original instrument from 1866, replaced in 1922 by an organ from Liareds orgelbyggeri, then a further instrument by Bo Wedrup in 1944. The current mechanical organ, built by Ingvar Johansson in 1973, retains the sounding façade of the 1922 instrument.

Further renovation marked the church's 300th anniversary in 1962, and the exterior was refreshed again in 1991, 1997 and 2005.
