Bro kyrka stands on a moraine hill overlooking flat farmland in Värmland, a church site likely to be of medieval origin. Its history and even the age of the present building remain uncertain, but it was already described as old by the late 17th century.

Just how old the existing stone church really is remains unclear. It is mentioned in county governor reports from 1692 as already being old at that time, though whether any part of that earlier building survives within the present structure is unknown. Sources differ on the church's earliest dating, with one giving a medieval origin and another suggesting a 12th-century stone church later extended.

The church's present plan seems to be the result of rebuilding carried out in several stages during the 18th century, producing a rectangular nave with a three-sided chancel, a sacristy added on the north side around the early 19th century, and a tower to the west. The tower's upper section, including its open lantern, was rebuilt in 1895 to designs by the architect Carl Möller.

The nave is covered by an early 19th-century board vault with a pronounced cornice. Much of the interior's present appearance reflects changes made during the 19th century, though a further restoration in the 1930s uncovered and restored the original colour scheme after the fittings had been overpainted in white and gold. Later work in the 1970s gave the church a lighter colour scheme and added a gallery understructure.//

Among the furnishings, the pulpit—built in the mid-18th century by a local master carpenter—is worked in Rococo style, while the altarpiece, in Baroque style, was given to the church in 1680 and depicts the triumphant Christ upon the globe of the world. The present sandstone font dates from 1932; fragments of an earlier soapstone font, recorded in an 18th-century inventory, were found in a nearby field in 1910. On the walls hang several funerary hatchments commemorating the parish's leading families.

The church has had at least two organs: one built in 1861 by Johan Nikolaus Söderling of Gothenburg, later replaced by the present pneumatic instrument built in 1930 by Nordfors & Co of Lidköping, which has since been altered more than once.
