A church has stood in Backa parish since the early Middle Ages, with the earlier building thought to date from the 12th or early 13th century. That medieval church was altered over the centuries, including a rebuilt chancel in 1721 and decorative ceiling paintings added in 1758. As Backa's population grew rapidly during the 19th century, the old church became too small for the congregation, and it was eventually demolished. A memorial stone in the churchyard now marks where its chancel once stood.
The current church was designed by the architect Johan Fredrik Åbom and built in a neo-Romanesque style, with a three-sided chancel and rounded arches typical of the period. It came into use in 1864, though its formal inauguration followed in 1868. The original spire proved structurally unsound and was replaced in 1927 by the present pyramid-shaped spire, designed by Axel Forssén.
The interior has been reworked several times over the past century. Around 1900 the ceiling was panelled and painted, the pews grained to imitate oak, and the walls decorated. Stained-glass windows were added to the chancel in 1913, followed by leaded glass elsewhere in 1915. A ceiling painting depicting the parable of the great banquet was added for the church's centenary. A further thorough restoration of the interior took place in 2004.
Among the church's furnishings, the oldest is a stone font dating from the 13th century, salvaged from the earlier medieval church, though its base was replaced in 1934. The carved altarpiece, showing Christ on the cross flanked by figures representing faith and hope, dates from the 1730s; two angel figures and a lamb from the same original altarpiece were later reused elsewhere in the church. The current altar was added in 1906, along with a new altar painting. The pulpit is decorated with an 18th-century painting of the four evangelists.
The church bears two bells of differing age: a smaller bell cast in 1771 for the earlier wooden bell tower, and a larger one added in 1901. The organ's case dates from 1868, though the mechanism itself was substantially rebuilt in 1994, incorporating some older pipework within a new instrument.
