A medieval church preceded the present wooden church, which was begun in 1693. Alsters kyrka was built as a cruciform church and had, for its time, considerable dimensions.

The transepts had a length and a width of 11 metres, and the total length was 33 metres. The tower was placed above the crossing, and the church was clad in wooden shingles, as with several other churches in Värmland.

The church was built largely in its existing form, but the transepts were shortened by seven metres during a thorough restoration in 1914-15. Part of the chancel was also partitioned off to form a sacristy, and the tower's load-bearing parts were reinforced with pillars.

The altarpiece is of a type commonly found in churches in Värmland and has, under the direction of builder Anders Rank from Filipstad, received several additions over the years; the central section with the figure of Christ is, however, original.

The pulpit is dated to 1662, when it was donated to Väse kyrka, from where Alster received it as a gift in 1704. During a renovation in 1976, the original colours on the altar and pulpit were uncovered after having been painted over for nearly 200 years.

East of the chancel stands a small, white-plastered building. It was erected during the first half of the 18th century as a burial chapel for the Kolthoff family, but served as a sacristy from 1800 until 1914.
