Pålkems kyrka stands in the far south-east of Gällivare parish, some seventy miles from the town of Gällivare itself. It is the oldest church outside the main settlement, and its plain white timber form marks it out as a modest but characterful rural chapel.

The church owes its existence to the initiative of Olof Bergqvist, then vicar of Gällivare and later bishop of Luleå. Built between 1907 and 1908 by master builder Olof Lindqvist to designs by F. Rickler, it was the first church erected outside Gällivare's town centre. Bishop Bergqvist himself consecrated the building on 9 February 1908, and it underwent a substantial renovation in 1954.

The timber-framed church is simple in plan: a nave running north-west to south-east, with a narrower, lower chancel at the north-west end and a tower housing the porch and entrance to the south-east. A sacristy is built into the angle between chancel and nave. Both nave and chancel are covered with sheet-metal gabled roofs, and the whole structure rests on a hewn stone foundation.

Inside, the pulpit stands at the north side of the chancel and is notable for lacking a canopy, or sounding board, above it. On the altar is a crucifix from Oberammergau in Bavaria, a gift from the local Pålkem women's sewing circle, while the communion vessels include a piece dating from the mid-eighteenth century, considerably older than the church building itself.

The church's small mechanical organ, with four stops, was built in 1950 by the Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri workshop of Gammelstad, and remains a modest but distinctive feature of the interior.
