Tvärreds kyrka, in the southern part of Ulricehamn kommun, was built in 1854 to replace an older church a few kilometres away that had become unsuitable for continued use. It was designed by architect Ludvig Hawerman and remains one of the largest churches in its parish grouping.

The church was constructed in the neoclassical Karl Johan style, built by master builder Andreas Persson of Bollebygd to Hawerman's designs. According to a local clergyman writing in the 1940s, the building's proportions, the placement of its entrance door and its cedar-effect decoration were said to echo descriptions of Solomon's Temple, though this remains a matter of local tradition rather than established architectural fact.

The altarpiece and pulpit are thought to have been made by the Mjöbäck woodcarver Johannes Andersson, a craftsman associated with several churches in the district. The chancel's stained glass dates from 1899, added several decades after the church itself was completed.

Several older furnishings survive from the demolished medieval-era church, including a sandstone font attributed to the twelfth-century carver known as Master Andreas. The font was lost for a time, having been found in 1876 built into a fence near Åsunden and subsequently sent to a museum in Gothenburg, before being returned to the church in 1981. An oblate box dated 1685 and a set of eighteenth-century wooden Baroque sculptures also came from the older building.

The most significant reworking of the interior took place in 1949, when the ceiling was repainted, the number of pews reduced, the old Baroque sculptures brought back into display, a new font-altar installed, and new wall sconces fitted. Further alterations to stairs and cloakroom areas followed in 1981.

Of the two bells, the larger is undated but resembles other late medieval bells, while the smaller was cast in 1880 to replace an older bell of 1750, paid for partly through public donations. The organ, on the west gallery, retains pipework in its facade dating to 1860, though the instrument has been rebuilt and altered more than once since, most recently in 1982.
