Tiarps kyrka

Tiarps kyrka is a church in the village of Tiarp, Västra Götaland, consecrated in 1910. It stands at the meeting point of two old roads, marking the third church to serve this small community in south-western Sweden.

The story of Tiarp's churches spans three separate buildings. The first stood at Flittorp until it was burned down by Danish forces in 1612. A second church was subsequently built in Tiarp village itself, but this was demolished in 1911, shortly after its replacement had opened. The present, third church was raised in 1910 at the junction where the roads from Flittorp and the old church village of Tiarp converge.

The building is designed in the neo-Gothic style, complete with a tower, and according to Wikipedia was built to designs by the architect Lars Emanuel Pettersson. It is described as spacious and light-filled inside.

Among the furnishings, the font is carved from sandstone and dates to the fourteenth century, decorated with rope-moulding ornament that long predates the current building. A wooden hymn-number board with carved wooden digits, along with a censer, are said to date from the seventeenth century, carried over perhaps from the earlier church on this site.

The altarpiece, depicting the Good Shepherd, together with a smaller painting in the sacristy, is the work of the artist Saga Walli. The church bells also have their own history: the larger bell was recast in Jönköping in 1838, while the smaller one was cast in 1751 by Nils Billsten in Skara. The organ was built by Olof Hammarberg of Gothenburg.
