Bolstads kyrka is unique in Dalsland in several respects, and much of its history reflects the special standing of the area and the parish.

The church, built of stone with a cruciform plan, is—in its surviving parts—the oldest dated church in the diocese, dated by dendrochronology to around 1150. Around the church lies a small parish centre with one of Dalsland's best-preserved vicarage environments.

Through the parish's status there is also a history of clergy with particular biographical value. The church is one of Dalsland's four cross-shaped churches and the only one of these built in stone. Unique is the medieval tower with its divided sound opening.

During the 18th century the church acquired its present exterior form. In 1756–61 the transepts and the sacristy were added, while the church porch was demolished and the south tower doorway was blocked. The tower spire was erected in 1752. The church interior, with its wide transepts, is large and spacious. Parts of the furnishings date from the 17th and 18th centuries but have been affected by later renovations.

The altarpiece is in two sections with paintings by Erik Grijs, 1675. The pulpit was built in 1775 by the sculptor Erik Grund from Karlstad. It is probably the church's third pulpit.

Among the older furnishings is the font, which has a base of sandstone and a bowl of soapstone. The sandstone base is the oldest part and is thought to date from the end of the 12th century.

The church also owns two lily stones from the 13th century. These are unusual in the diocese of Karlstad and are of Västergötland origin, as is the sandstone base of the font. Older grave monuments in the church also include three grave slabs in the chancel, over the vicars Ericus Olavi (died 1627) and Petrus Gyllenius (died 1675) and the provost Johannes Andersson Lind (died 1708). The churchyard's collection of grave monuments is remarkable and unusually rich in content.
