Västervåla kyrka is the parish church of Västanfors-Västervåla, in the Diocese of Västerås. Although the present building was consecrated in 1893, the site has a much longer history, with the first known church here built of timber, probably as early as the 1400s.

That medieval timber church was eventually replaced by a new wooden building completed in 1640. Late in the 18th century, in 1794, a stone tower was added, replacing an earlier bell-frame structure. The tower has remained a constant feature ever since, even as the rest of the church changed considerably around it.

In 1890 work began to lay a new floor, but builders discovered the old timber framework was too decayed to preserve. As a result, between 1891 and 1893 the timber nave was demolished and replaced with a new brick nave, built to designs by the architect Fredrik Lilljekvist, while the older stone tower was retained. The roof covering was later changed from sheet iron to copper during works in 1959.

A thorough renovation in the late 1980s and in 1990 aimed to create a bright, practical worship space centred on the congregation. Three windows in the chancel that had been bricked up were reopened, the colour scheme was partly altered, and the altar table and altar rail were made movable, reflecting a more flexible approach to how the church is used for services.

Several older furnishings survive from the church's earlier history. A triumphal crucifix dates from the 1300s, considerably predating the current building, and a wooden font also came from an earlier church on the site. The pulpit was made in 1647 by the craftsman Johan Snickare. The church's organ, built in 1881 by the Örebro firm E. A. Setterquist & Son, was inaugurated that November and is a modest instrument of seven stops.
