Väne Åsaka kyrka stands east of Trollhättan beside road 42, in an area with a long church history. Its oldest fabric dates back to the late 1100s, though much of the medieval building has since been altered or rebuilt.

The church's earliest surviving portion is a stretch of the west end of the nave wall, thought to survive from the original late twelfth-century structure. Over the following centuries the building was much altered: repairs and improvements were carried out during the 1600s, and around 1727–1730 the church was extended with a three-sided chancel, in keeping with the fashion of the period.

In 1750 the noted church painter Johan Risberg, based in Skövde, decorated the ceiling and gallery front. Unfortunately these ceiling paintings were removed during a heavy-handed restoration in 1898–1899, when the roof was raised to accommodate a new organ installation. Only the apostle figures on the gallery front survive from Risberg's scheme.

The present tower dates from 1832 (sources give 1832 or 1836), built to replace the earlier freestanding bell frame that had originally stood beside the church.

Among the furnishings, the pulpit is said to have been donated in the 1720s or in 1735 by the army surgeon Adam Faselius, while the altarpiece was given in 1727 or 1735 by Colonel Weinholtz — accounts differ slightly on the exact dates. Both pieces are worked in a rustic Baroque style and are thought to be by the same craftsman. A carved trumpeting angel from the 1700s hangs above the chancel.

The font is medieval, probably dating from the 1200s. Two large tomb slabs, commemorating Sven Bengtsson Stålman and his wife Brita Lilliebielke, have been placed against the outer south wall of the tower. The church also has an organ with a facade designed by Fredrik Lilljekvist, first installed in 1899 and rebuilt with a new pneumatic mechanism in 1952, incorporating some of the original pipework.
