Vadstena klosterkyrka, also known as the Blue Church for the pale blue sheen of its limestone, rises above the town of Vadstena beside Lake Vättern. Built to the exacting instructions of St Birgitta, it remains a major pilgrimage site and one of Sweden's most striking medieval church buildings.

Construction began in the late 1300s around an earlier wooden chapel, following St Birgitta's own vision of a church built with "plain workmanship, humble and strong". The stone church was formally consecrated in 1430, though it was not considered complete under her instructions until further altars were dedicated in 1455. It served the adjoining Vadstena Abbey until the monks left around 1550 and the nuns followed in 1595; since 1829 it has functioned as the parish church of Vadstena.

The building is a large hall church with three aisles of equal height, built from local limestone with tall narrow windows and heavy external buttresses. Unusually, the main choir lies at the western end, facing Lake Vättern, in keeping with Birgitta's directions, while the main entrance is in the east. The church has no tower of its own; its bells hang in the nearby medieval Rödtornet (Red Tower), which survived the demolition of the former parish church, St Per's, in the nineteenth century. Star vaults of brick, carried on octagonal limestone pillars, cover the nave, and faint painted plant-like ornament was uncovered on the vault ribs during restoration work in the twentieth century.

At the west end stands the high altar, backed by an altarpiece from around 1520 depicting the glorification of the Virgin Mary. Behind it lies the former brethren's choir, home to the elaborately carved Birgitta cabinet made in Lübeck in the fifteenth century. The church's most significant object is the reliquary shrine said to hold the relics of St Birgitta, made in 1393 for her translation two years after her canonisation; some later scholarship has questioned this identification, a point worth bearing in mind when viewing the shrine. Since 2003 it has stood in the queen's choir near the high altar.
