In the heart of the Utby district of Gothenburg stands Utby kyrka (Utby Church), a parish church that reached its centenary in 2023. It was designed by architect Arvid Bjerke, whose work can be seen in several well-known Gothenburg buildings.

The church stands on ground with a much older history: medieval Utby, together with the village of Kviberg, formed its own parish, and a church here is thought to have been destroyed in 1566 during Danish military campaigns in the area. The present building is a twentieth-century successor rather than a survival from that period.

Utby kyrka was inaugurated on Palm Sunday 1923, built as part of the development of the Utbynäs villa suburb and funded through extensive local fundraising. According to local sources, the project was initiated by Hulda Mattsson, wife of the suburb's founder Anders Mattsson, and the plans were drawn up by her husband's nephew, the architect Arvid Bjerke.

The exterior walls are built of rough-hewn eye gneiss quarried on site, giving the church a solid, textured appearance in the National Romantic style. The rectangular nave has a saddle roof of single-curved tile, with a straight-ended chancel to the east and the entrance to the west. A tower with a masonry lower section and red-painted timber panelling above rises beside the chancel, topped with a copper-clad, rounded roof and a weathercock.

Inside, the vaulted wooden ceiling and triumphal arch were painted in 1919 by the artist John Sten, whose decorative scheme recalls the naive biblical imagery of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Swedish church painting, with echoes of the Dalecarlian folk-painting tradition. The north side depicts the Christmas story, centred on Mary and the Christ child, while the south side shows the Good Friday narrative with Christ on the cross; the triumphal arch marks a symbolic passage between the visible and unseen worlds. This painted interior was conserved in 1952 and remains a distinctive feature of the church.

The carved wooden altarpiece, designed by Bjerke himself and contemporary with the church, shows a tall figure of the risen Christ flanked by the twelve apostles. The organ facade also dates from the church's construction, carved by Frithiof Richter to designs by Sigfrid Ericson, though the organ mechanism itself has been rebuilt and replaced more than once since. A bell cast at Bofors in 1919 was an early gift to the parish, and a parish hall (1978) and an early twentieth-century church school stand adjoining the church.
