Tyngsjö kyrka stands on the Orrudden peninsula by Lake Tyngsjön in Dalarna, deep in the historic Malung finnmark. This striking neo-Gothic timber church, largely unaltered since its consecration, is a rare survival of its type and a memorial to the hardships of settling this once-remote forest district.

The area was visited only occasionally by clergy from the mid-1700s, and it was not until 1814 that a burial ground was established, followed by a modest chapel built in 1815–1817. This early chapel stood about 1.6 kilometres from the present church; its site is now a disused churchyard protected as an ancient monument, marked by a memorial stone.

Tyngsjö gained its own priest in the early 1850s, and after land at Orrudden was acquired in 1855, a rectory was built there. A new churchyard nearer the water soon replaced the original one, which had become too small. By the early 1870s the old chapel was judged unfit for renovation, and it was decided to build afresh at Orrudden instead. The architect was Johan Erik Söderlund, responsible for several neo-Gothic churches in Sweden. The new church was consecrated in 1875, and timber salvaged from the demolished chapel was reused to build a parish cottage with wash-house and bakehouse for the priest.

The church is a modest, restrained example of neo-Gothic timber architecture, its white colour scheme owing as much to neoclassical taste as to Gothic Revival fashion. It stands on a foundation of hewn granite blocks, with a timber-framed body and a post-built tower rising some 37 metres. The neo-Gothic detailing is simple, expressed mainly through window shapes, corbels and panelled facade divisions; the exterior remains largely as built, apart from changes to the roof covering.

Inside, tall windows fill the light, pastel-toned interior with brightness. The furnishings are painted in grey tones today, though records indicate a blue-green scheme was used during one period. A major restoration in the early 1960s largely preserved the original fittings, including a screen wall and sacristy arrangement now considered an unusually rare survival of its kind. The last resident priest left Tyngsjö in 1963, and the former rectory became a camp and conference site. In 1970 a lightning strike set the tower spire alight, but local residents acted quickly and saved the church from destruction.
