Torsö kyrka stands on Torsö, the largest island in Lake Vänern, a whitewashed church built in the plain Karl Johan style favoured in early nineteenth-century Sweden. It occupies a site with much older church roots and offers visitors a modest but characterful example of parish church building of its period.

The present building dates from 1838 and replaced an earlier medieval stone church on the same site, known as Wisala or Viksala kyrka, thought to date from the 12th or 13th century. Its replacement reflects a broader pattern seen across Sweden in this era, when many ageing medieval churches were rebuilt in the sober neoclassical Karl Johan style named after the reigning king.

Inside, the most striking feature is the altarpiece, a polychrome wood carving by the sculptor Arvid Bryth of Mölndal, made in 1954. It depicts the miraculous catch of fish described in the Gospel of John, chapter 21, a subject well suited to a church serving an island and lake community. A votive ship hangs in the chancel, a traditional maritime offering found in many Swedish coastal and lakeside churches.

The font is a wooden piece from 1977, but its base is medieval, salvaged from the earlier church that once stood here, providing a tangible link to the site's much older origins.

The organ has its own layered history: the current instrument was built in 1953 by the Frederiksborg Orgelbyggeri workshop, with fourteen stops across two manuals and pedal. It incorporates the facade, wind-chest and four stops surviving from an earlier organ built in 1865 by Johan Nikolaus Söderling, so parts of the older instrument remain in use within the newer casework.

A renovation in 1985 added the current gallery understructure, including a cloakroom and preparation room, a practical addition rather than a dramatic architectural change, but part of the church's ongoing adaptation for parish use. The church, which seats around 200 people, has belonged to Mariestad's parish since 2006, having previously been the seat of its own Torsö parish.
