Stillhetens kapell: Silverdalskapellet – an unusual chapel suited to christenings, funerals and concerts alike.

On 14 September 1969, Bishop Helge Ljungberg inaugurated the newly built Silverdalskapellet at Silverdal cemetery. The walls are made of raw concrete, the ceiling features unpainted wooden beams, and the leather-covered pews stand on a beautiful, coarsely planed floor of Öland limestone. Above the altar, made of Carrara marble, hangs a sun cross, also softly shaped in Carrara marble. The sun cross relates to the Uppland cross – a pre-Christian symbol that was adopted by Christianity as early as the Viking Age.

The chapel seats 150 people. Although the church room is not particularly large, it gives an impression of space and light. The chancel wall, which follows the pyramid shape, is framed by painted glass windows. To the east, the wall is built up with large windows so that the room extends out into nature.

The architect of the chapel, which includes a waiting hall and a few office rooms, was Lage Knape, then town architect of Sollentuna. The artistic decoration is by the artist Jan Brazda, and architect Ralph Alton designed the interior. Walking up the path towards the chapel, one is struck by the building's unusual shape, with its tall, soaring pyramid-shaped roof, and by the golden portal. Down a flight of stairs is Silverdal crematorium.
