Slite kyrka, on Gotland's east coast, is a striking mid-twentieth-century church notable as the first to be built on the island by the Church of Sweden since the 1300s. Perched on a limestone cliff, it looks out over the sea near the village of Slite.

The church was designed by the Copenhagen architect Holger Jensen and built between 1959 and 1960, using only Gotland materials, principally limestone and pine. It was consecrated on 3 July 1960 by Bishop Algot Anderberg.

The building's plan takes the form of an elongated octagon, with the altar at the southern end and the main entrance at the north. A projecting section to the east houses the sacristy, linked to the bell tower and a large cross. The steep, hipped roof is clad in timber panelling, a feature that shapes both the exterior silhouette and the character of the interior space. Inside and out, the walls are faced with limestone slabs, and much of the structure is glazed.

The most memorable feature for visitors is the glazed altar wall, which serves in place of a conventional altarpiece: rather than painted or carved imagery, it frames a view directly out to the sea, an unusual and effective piece of modern ecclesiastical design.

Among the furnishings, the triumphal crucifix and a Madonna on the wall near the font, both dating from 1960, are the work of the local artist Bertil Nyström of Slite. The mechanical organ was built the same year by A. Magnusson Orgelbyggeri.

Standing on a hill in the middle of Slite, the church commands wide views over the settlement, the sea and the sheltered waters of Bogeviken, making its setting as notable as its architecture.
