Skillingmarks kyrka was built of timber in 1689-90. The current church was preceded by a medieval wooden church at Klevene udde, a few kilometres north of today's church site.

An archaeological excavation in 1955 uncovered the foundation of a small church building with a rectangular nave and a square chancel. A memorial stone now stands at the old church site. Skillingmarks current church was built in 1689-90. At that time the church had a different appearance from today, including a lower west tower, a steeper nave roof, and a three-sided chancel end typical of the period. The church was also entirely clad in wood shingles. In the 1840s the church's windows were enlarged and a gallery was built in the west. However, it was primarily a thorough restoration in 1880 that gave the church its current appearance. At that time the chancel was rebuilt and given a straight end, the sacristy was moved from the north wall to a position east of the chancel, new pointed-arch windows were installed, and the church's shingle cladding was removed and replaced with a light-painted wooden panelling. The church's interior also bears traces of the late 19th century, but has preserved some older furnishings, including the altarpiece from the early 1700s by the sculptor Nils Falk, and a font of soapstone from the 13th century, probably of Norwegian workmanship.
