Salabackekyrkan serves the Salabacke district of Uppsala, a neighbourhood that grew rapidly in the early 1950s. Built to meet the spiritual needs of this new community, the church stands at the foot of Skomakarberget hill and remains a focal point for local worship and music.

The church was designed by architect Sten Hummel-Gumælius, working closely with Jean Michon-Bordes, and was consecrated on 14 December 1958 as the second church built for the parish. It originally belonged to Uppsala Cathedral parish before being transferred to Vaksala parish in 1963.

In 1993 the building was completely destroyed by arson. It was rebuilt to its original appearance and reopened in time for Advent 1994, with the parish later marking the anniversary of both the first consecration and the reconsecration together.

The church forms the southern part of a larger complex of parish buildings. Its single-hall worship space has a chancel to the east and the main entrance in the west gable, reached through an enclosed porch. The exterior walls are pine shingle painted in traditional Falun red, and the steep saddle roof, originally slate, was replaced with sheet metal after the fire. Many windows are leaded with small panes. Inside, the bright interior is shaped by an open roof-truss construction with rafters running down to the floor.

The altarpiece, depicting Christ's entry into Jerusalem, is an oil painting by Bror Hjorth, consecrated in 1963 and rescued from the 1993 fire. The pulpit, open pew arrangement and west-end organ gallery are all made of pale wood. Three textile hangings by artist Bärbel Neumann, given to mark the church's 25th anniversary, decorate the parish hall walls.

The present organ was built in 1997 by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri of Gammelstad, with colouring by architect Kerstin Ferner drawn from the altarpiece's palette.

Salabackekyrkan is also known for its distinctive musical and pastoral life, including so-called 'sinnesro' (serenity) masses linked to twelve-step recovery groups, and youth services with strong musical involvement, reflecting the church's ongoing role as a community gathering place.
