The parish has medieval origins, and for centuries it formed the mother parish of a wider pastorate that at various times also included the parishes of Fors, Håsjö, Hällesjö and Stugun, the latter being separated off as its own parish in 1589. From 1903 until 2016 Ragunda constituted its own pastorate before being incorporated first into Fors och Ragunda pastorat and, from 2022, into Sydöstra Jämtlands pastorat.
The parish today maintains two churches: the older Ragunda gamla kyrka, which has been retained even though it is no longer the main parish church, and Ragunda nya kyrka, which now serves as the principal place of worship. The survival of both buildings side by side offers visitors an unusual chance to compare an older church with its newer successor within the same small community.
Records of the parish's clergy stretch back remarkably far, with named incumbents documented from the mid-14th century onwards, through the centuries of Swedish church administration and into the modern era. This long unbroken list of priests, drawn from historical church registers, reflects the parish's continuous religious life across more than six hundred years, even as its administrative boundaries and pastoral groupings shifted repeatedly.
