The chapel at Östra kyrkogården was built in the Neo-Gothic style. It was inaugurated in 1861. The architect was H J Strömberg, who was also responsible for the design of the cemetery. The chapel is a neutral ceremonial space for both civil funerals and funerals according to the Church of Sweden's order of service or other religious traditions. The building is a listed heritage site.
In April 2018 the chapel caught fire after a lightning strike hit the roof. The fire caused extensive damage and a major restoration was required.
The ceremonial space reopened in November 2019. From the outside, the new slate roof can be seen, which is more similar to the original from 1861. However, the major changes are on the inside: new colour schemes, a redesigned organ loft, and, not least, fresco paintings uncovered after being hidden for many years.
The pews have been given new upholstery, the walls and ceiling new paint, and a new circular lamp with energy-efficient LED technology hangs from the ceiling. The organ loft has also been redesigned. A new area for wreaths has also been added.
During an extension in 1955, white-painted wooden panels were placed over the wall paintings, giving the room a different character. The fresco paintings were uncovered during the 2019 renovation.
