Oskarshamns kyrka, the town church of Oskarshamn, stands in the town park and has served as the parish church since the late nineteenth century. This guide draws on its recorded history, architecture and notable furnishings for visitors interested in its background.

The church was built to replace an earlier place of worship after the town, then still growing out of the older settlement of Döderhultsvik, decided in 1860 to raise funds for a new building. Construction was contracted in 1874, and the church was consecrated on 3 December 1876 before a congregation reported to number 1,500 people. It was designed by the architect J.P. Schonberg in the neo-Gothic style then fashionable for Swedish town churches.

The building is oriented east to west, with the chancel to the east and the main entrance beneath the tower to the west. The tower is topped by a tall Gothic spire surrounded by four smaller spires, and houses three bells cast by the founders J.O. Beckman & Co. The interior reflects neo-Gothic taste throughout, with ceiling and chancel paintings by the artist Filip Månsson.

Several furnishings were added in the decades following consecration. An altarpiece by the artist Sigrid Blomberg was installed in 1898, and four chancel windows were donated in 1902 and 1929 to designs by C.R.C. Callmander and Albert Eld. During a restoration in 1927, wooden chandeliers carved by Anton Källström to designs by the architect Ernst Spolén were added to the church.

The church has had several organs over its history. The first, built in 1877 by E.A. Setterquist and Son, was replaced by an instrument from Åkerman and Lund in 1908, and again in 1965 by a mechanical organ built by Paul Ott of Göttingen, Germany. A smaller choir organ was added by Grönlunds orgelbyggeri in 1978.

More recently, the church was closed between 2008 and 2010 for restoration and treatment of mould damage, reopening in October 2010.
