Ölmstad kyrka

Denomination

Associated diocese
Diocese of Växjö

Ölmstad kyrka is a medieval parish church near Ölmstad, roughly twenty kilometres north of Huskvarna in the Diocese of Växjö. Its mid-12th-century origins, later vaulted chancel and painted ceilings make it a rewarding stop for anyone interested in Sweden's rural church history.

The church was built around the middle of the 12th century, originally a modest nine metres wide and twelve metres long. After a fire in the 15th century, the flat wooden ceiling was replaced with the ribbed vaulting seen today, and the present chancel and sacristy were added at around the same time. The vaulted chancel is decorated with murals dating from the late 15th century and the Renaissance, painted in two layers roughly a century apart. Visitors can pick out zigzag bands, trailing foliage motifs, saints, grotesque figures and biblical scenes including Moses and the brazen serpent, Jonah and the whale, Golgotha and the Resurrection.

The church's history has not been entirely peaceful: in 1568, during the Northern Seven Years' War, Danish troops plundered and burned the building. The tower on the west side was added later, in 1729, replacing an earlier freestanding bell tower.

Among the furnishings, the red sandstone font is said to date from the 12th century and has been attributed to a carver known as Master Bestiarius. The pulpit was made in 1649 by Päder Knutzsson. A colourful tapestry hangs on the south wall, and a wrought-iron light-holder was made by Folke Andersson, a smith who worked at the Filipsberg forge in Ölmstad until 2014.

The church has had several organs over the centuries, from a six-stop instrument built in 1680 by Georg Hum of Norrköping to later rebuilds. The current mechanical organ dates from 1972, though its case still preserves the façade of the 1885 instrument it replaced.
