Nyhems kyrka stands in the village of Ulvsjö, three kilometres north of Nyhem in Jämtland, and is often held up as the very image of a small, traditional Swedish parish church, its timber form set among tall birches in a quiet rural churchyard.

Built of wood in the early 1850s to a design attributed to the architect Carl-Gustaf Blom-Carlsson, with construction led by master builder Per Karlsson of Hosjö, the church was raised after the local parish separated from its neighbours in 1851. A farmer from Ulvsjö, Mattias Knutsson, provided the land for the building and churchyard, reportedly on condition that he could keep the manure from the church stables. Siting the church at Ulvsjö was a practical choice, giving parishioners from the surrounding villages a roughly equal distance to travel.

The church was consecrated in the mid-1850s, and several of its furnishings date from around that time, including a chalice, a wine jug and a black chasuble. A pulpit, font and chamber organ followed later in the nineteenth century. The interior is notably pale and pearl-grey, with gilded carved details and an altar surround of pilasters and a gable crowned by a triangular motif representing the divine name, set among carved clouds. Sources agree the woodcarving, including a distinctive clock case fashioned like a longcase clock and used for hymn numbers, is the work of local craftsmen, with the font also attributed to the same hand.

The altarpiece, showing Christ appearing to the women on Easter morning, is the work of the Jämtland painter Anders (A.) Liljekvist of Ås; accounts differ on whether it was donated at the church's original consecration or commissioned later, around its 1955 centenary. A pulpit with carved theological symbols, linked to its canopy by a draped hanging, is also noted as part of the original decorative scheme. A chandelier was added to mark the centenary, joining others that lit the church until electric lighting supplemented them in the 1980s, when the interior was also repainted to recover its lighter, earlier tone after some years of darker decoration. An organ is recorded as having been built for the church in 1891, though later notes describe an organ loft being built without an instrument during a 1920s renovation — a discrepancy in the record that is worth noting. The two bells in the tower date from 1854 and 1864 and were bought from Sundsvall; ringing remained a manual task until it was automated in 2004.

Below the church stand an older parish cottage, once used partly as a school and restored by volunteers in the early 1970s, and a newer parish hall used for gatherings and church coffee. The cottage now serves in part as a small local history museum.
