Nygårds kapell was designed by architect Lars-Erik Havstad from Karlstad and remains largely unchanged since it was built in 1981.

Åmål today has three church buildings. The old church was erected in 1669 on a medieval church site. The main church, "Åmåls nya", dating from 1806, is located on Kyrkberget approximately 500 metres north of the old church.

In 1981, Nygårdskyrkan was built at Västra kyrkogården, here on the western outskirts of the town. One kilometre south of the town centre lies also Södra kyrkogården, which was established in 1900. Nygårdskyrkan is situated in an area that was previously undeveloped and formed part of the Nygårds estate. Of the manor complex itself, the main building, a storehouse and a barn remain today.

The church complex also includes a bell tower and four outbuildings. Nygårdskyrkan is Dalsland's youngest church and remains largely unchanged since it was built. It has a fine overall design with architectural qualities.

The church is characterised by clean, straight lines in a restrained mode of expression. The church consists of a rectangular nave running east-west, with an extension to the north housing a mortuary and utility spaces. The façades consist of white brick that has been roughly slurried and rendered. The corners of the building are marked by being left unrendered. A steep gabled roof is covered with black concrete tiles.

To the west is the main entrance, with a recessed open section resembling a loggia. Here stands a symbolic wooden sculpture, "The Risen Christ", by the artist Ingmar Lööf from Kristinehamn.

The interior of the church is sparse. The walls consist of white brick with an eave of light-coloured wood panelling. The roof construction is open, with wood panelling in a blue tone. The visible roof trusses are designed with features drawing on Old Norse traditions.

The chancel is marked by tall, light-coloured windows on the south side. The altar is placed in a projecting niche facing east. The altarpiece was designed by sculptor Ove Lindblom from Karlstad and symbolises the tree of life, with a core and trunk shaped like a cross. There is no fixed pew furnishing; instead, loose chairs are grouped on either side of the central aisle.
