The church was designed by the Norrköping architect Guy Sjöwall, who gave the building its distinctive ark-like form, and it was completed and dedicated in 1987. It serves the local community of Lambohov and the neighbouring Mjärdevi area, as well as functioning as a university church for students.
Lambohovskyrkan operates as a co-operative church, shared between the Church of Sweden's Lambohov parish (within the Slaka-Nykil pastorate) and the Equmenia congregation in Linköping (formerly the Linköping Mission Church). This ecumenical arrangement means the building welcomes people regardless of their denominational background, and hosts worship, baptisms, weddings and funerals from both traditions.
The building's acoustics are said to be particularly good, and the church has been used for concerts and music recordings. A nursery school was originally housed within the building, though by 2009 this space had been repurposed as a centre for older people.
Beyond worship, the church has long supported a broad range of community activities, including music and study groups and youth work for children and young people.
