Melleruds samhälle grew up during the latter part of the 19th century. Its starting point was a trading community that had formed around an inn, the post office and the assizes (tinget) established during the 17th century at the junction of roads that met here. By the end of the 19th century, Mellerud had become a railway junction. A railway station community grew up around the railway, and in 1908 Mellerud became a köping (market town).
In Mellerud, a committee was appointed in 1913, and in 1930 Melleruds förening för kyrklig verksamhet (Mellerud's Association for Church Activity) was formed. A driving force was the vicar (kyrkoherde) Axel Bäckner. That same year, a plot of land was purchased, and a decision was made to erect a building based on drawings by C Magnusson of Stockholm.
Melleruds kapell och församlingshem was inaugurated in 1932. Here, the church interior (kyrkorummet) is integrated with other activities, assembly rooms, a kitchen, office rooms, and what was formerly a caretaker's residence and parish office (pastorsexpedition). The original part of the building is well preserved on the exterior, in a design typical of its period with features of 1920s Classicism.
Internally, the building has undergone several changes. Substantial parts, particularly of the church interior and its original entrance hall, have however been preserved. The church interior is rectangular, with a narrower, straight-ended chancel (kor) to the east and an organ gallery to the west. The chancel is flanked by two spaces with arched vaults, originally small rooms enclosed by full walls. The division between the church interior and the "lilla salen" ("the small hall"), to the west of the church interior, consists of a modern white-painted folding door that allows the rooms to be opened up and used together. The chancel is framed by a triumphal arch with pilasters executed in lime mortar and marbled to resemble dark brown limestone. The original altar and altar rail have been removed. A round-arched chancel window contains a stained-glass window with a Christ motif set between fretwork wood. Around the altar are placed seven free-standing prayer stools (bönpallar) in green wood painted with a wood-grain effect, with upholstered kneelers. The pulpit is original. The church has a font of dark brown wood with carved patterns, contemporary with the building. In the churchyard stands a free-standing bell tower (klockstapel). The bell tower is an open construction of round posts with a hood in the form of a saddle roof covered in slate. It is reportedly erected during the 1960s.
