Kungälvs kyrka, in the town of Kungälv near Gothenburg, is a wooden Baroque church best known for its striking painted ceiling. Built at the end of the 17th century after its predecessor was destroyed, it remains an unusually well-preserved example of the period.

The previous church on this site was burned by Norwegian forces in 1676, during the Gyldenlöve war. Construction of the present church began in 1679, and the first service was held on Whit Sunday in 1682, though the tower with its distinctive spire was not finished until 1683. The architect responsible was Christopher Bräck, a Swiss-born builder then active in western Sweden, and the project drew funding from parishes and towns across several dioceses.

The church's most celebrated feature is its painted wooden barrel-vault ceiling, completed between 1697 and 1698 by Erik Eriksson Grijs. Depicting a blue sky divided by wreaths of cloud into scenes from the Book of Revelation, the Last Judgement, and other biblical subjects, it is said to be the oldest surviving painted wooden vault in the Diocese of Gothenburg and has never been overpainted, though it was renovated in the 1880s and again, by conservator Maria Lagerqvist, in 2023.

The interior holds a number of notable furnishings. The pulpit, carved in oak with pearwood inlay in a Dutch-German style, dates from the early 1600s and originally stood in Gothenburg's Gustavi Cathedral before being brought to Kungälv in 1682. Its panels show the Saviour, the four evangelists, and figures representing Faith, Hope and Justice. The altarpiece was created in 1683 by the sculptor Marcus Jäger the Elder and painted by Johan Hammer, while the font, carved in 1697 by Nils Persson and painted by Grijs, was a gift from two Gothenburg aldermen.// Among the smaller curiosities is a votive ship hanging from the ceiling, given by a local alderman in the late 1600s and armed, according to tradition, with 52 tiny cannon.

The church bells reflect a layered history: the two smaller bells contain medieval metal originally cast for a now-demolished church on Fästningsholmen, recast more than once over the centuries, while the largest bell dates only from 1935. The current organ, built in 1970 by Hammarbergs Orgelbyggeri of Gothenburg, replaced several earlier instruments and has a case designed in a Renaissance-influenced style.
