Kristbergs kyrka stands on high ground above the main road on the northern shore of Lake Boren, between Borensberg and Motala. Its oldest parts date back several centuries, and the church retains a striking tower and richly painted ceilings that reward a visitor's attention.

The church's origins lie around the turn of the thirteenth century, when an early stone church was built on this elevated site overlooking Lake Boren. During the later Middle Ages, probably in the fifteenth century, that original structure was replaced by a considerably wider building, and the north and south walls from this period survive within the church seen today. The sacristy from the same rebuilding, later extended northwards in 1729, still contains fragments of late medieval wall paintings.

One of the most distinctive features is the tower, built to an unusual 'broad west tower' plan with a rectangular rather than square footprint, a form generally associated with powerful secular or ecclesiastical patrons. Historical records suggest the Bishops of Linköping held a central role in the Kristberg area from the early thirteenth century until Gustav Vasa's confiscation of church estates, and surviving medieval documents referring to episcopal authority over local tenants support this connection. The tower's spire was altered over time, with two spires recorded in the seventeenth century before it took on its current form in the later eighteenth century.

In the 1720s the medieval vaults were removed, and a new choir with a three-sided timber ceiling was added, along with a matching new roof over the extended nave. The decorative ceiling paintings that resulted are among the church's highlights: those in the choir, completed in 1725, and in the nave, finished in 1728, depict Old Testament scenes, with Christ-related imagery in the choir. They were painted by Anders Wikström of Söderköping and funded by a local ironworks patron, with the parish contributing labour towards the new choir's construction.//

The altarpiece was donated in 1731 by another ironworks patron, while the altar rail was funded in 1830 by a local estate administrator. The imposing brass baroque chandeliers date from the first half of the eighteenth century. A significant renovation was carried out in 1879 by local parish builders, with further work in 1950 and 1994.

The church's organ history reflects several rebuildings: an instrument donated in 1728 was later expanded, followed by new organs in 1766 and 1879. The current mechanical organ was built in 1968, retaining the case front from the 1879 instrument.
