Katarina kyrka is located on Södermalm in Stockholm. It was built during the period 1656-1695 to designs by Jean de la Vallée, royal architect responsible for the state's building activities. Despite two severe fires, in 1723 and 1990, the church still stands as one of the city's foremost attractions, visible from far around.

The church is one of Sweden's most remarkable baroque churches, which with its Greek cross plan was the Nordic region's first central church, specifically built for Lutheran worship with the pulpit and altar equally strongly emphasised at the centre of the church. However, the altar was moved in 1690, at the parish's request, to the eastern crossing arm in the traditional manner.

The church has 522 seats, which can be extended with additional chairs to 890 seats.
