Kårböle kyrka stands on the old pilgrim route to Nidaros (Trondheim) in the Ljusdal district of Hälsingland. The present building, dating from 1870, is the third church known to have stood on this site since the early Middle Ages.

A wooden chapel is thought to have stood near the Kårån stream from early medieval times, remaining in use until the late 1500s. It was followed in 1599 by a new church between the stream and today's road, which by the 1760s had suffered severe rot damage. A replacement timber church was completed, and in 1776 the painter Paul Mickelsson Hallberg and his young apprentice Jonas Åkerström decorated its walls with scenes from the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. Later research suggests the fifteen-year-old Åkerström, who went on to become a professor at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm, may have carried out much of this work himself.

That eighteenth-century church deteriorated quickly, and in 1867 it was decided to build again, this time close to the village road. Designed by the architect J. E. Söderlund and built under master builder Per Norin, the new church opened in 1870. It is a rendered timber hall church in a restrained neoclassical style, and the surrounding churchyard was laid out the same year.

When the older building was dismantled, its painted wall panels were carefully preserved, and several were later reinstalled in the sacristy and main body of the present church, including scenes such as the Annunciation, the Last Supper, the Ascension and the Good Shepherd. The altarpiece frame, richly carved in 1712 by the Gävle sculptor Petter Blom, also survives from the earlier church, though the pulpit he made to match it does not; the current pulpit dates from 1870. The altarpiece itself, showing Christ among modern-day pilgrims, was painted by Nils-Aron Berge in 1951. Two bronze relief plaques of the evangelists Mark and John, rescued from Blom's lost pulpit, hang above the sacristy doors.
