The church was designed by the architect Georg Rudner and built with a brick structure comprising a nave, an eastern chancel and a west tower, with a sacristy extending north of the chancel. Inside, the walls are whitewashed and the floor is laid with red brick, giving the interior a simple, light character typical of mid-twentieth-century Swedish church design.
A notable feature of the chancel is an altar wall painting by Simon Sörman, which forms the visual focus of the interior. The font, five-sided and made of polished black stone, is among the church's distinctive furnishings.
The organ was built in 1960 by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri of Gammelstad and is a mechanical instrument, reflecting the careful craftsmanship applied to church organs of that period in the region.
From 1962 to 2009 Hakkas kyrka served as the parish church of the former Hakkas parish, before that parish was incorporated into the wider Gällivare församling, under which it is administered today.
