Diocese of Karlstad

Gustav Adolfs kyrka was completed in 1781 and was consecrated in 1787 by Magnus Piscator, vicar of Älvdalen parish.

In 1765, the works manager Emanuel Geijer received the permission of His Royal Majesty to build a church for Gustafsfors bruk. In 1791, the parish was named Gustav Adolf, after the then Crown Prince, later Gustaf IV Adolf. East of the church stands a timbered and boarded bell tower, which was erected at the same time as the church building. The church, which is built of timber, has a cross-shaped plan with a three-sided chancel termination. However, the two transepts were, until 1841, separated from the church interior itself and served at that time as a church porch and a storage space respectively. The sacristy is housed behind the altar. Above the sacristy is a gallery, in whose screen the pulpit was originally incorporated. The pulpit thus had, as in many other churches from the latter half of the 18th century and the early 19th century, its place above the altar. The chancel was redesigned during a restoration in 1928, and the pulpit was moved to the north wall of the chancel. The church was built for the Uddeholm company, which handed it over to the parish. The altarpiece depicts Christ on the Cross and is probably contemporary with the church.
