The story of Christian worship in Ekhagen begins in the early 1960s, when the district was a newly built residential area. Svenska kyrkan established a presence in a basement on Stockrosgatan, where services, Sunday school and everyday parish activities took place while the community grew around it.
By 1968 the congregation had outgrown this improvised space and moved a short distance to the centre of Ekhagen, where a so-called 'vandringskyrka' (a temporary or 'walking' church, designed to serve for a limited period) was inaugurated. This building was intended to meet the parish's needs only until a decision on a permanent church could be made and funded.
That permanent building, the present Ekhagskyrkan, was eventually consecrated on 12 May 1996 by Bishop Anders Wejryd, finally replacing the temporary church that had served the parish since 1968.
One link with the district's earlier worship history survives inside the church: the mechanical organ, built in the 1960s by the Åkerman & Lund Orgelbyggeri workshop in Knivsta. It was not built for Ekhagskyrkan itself but was moved here in 1969 from another Jönköping church, Gräshagskyrkan.
