There has been a church and parish in Bygdeå since the early Middle Ages. The oldest written source dates from 1314, a tax record showing that Bygdeå parish paid 4 öre towards the crusades. The first church built was of wood and no longer survives. It was probably a smaller timbered church with a sacristy. Some items from the church's earliest history have been preserved, including a censer that is now held at the Statens Historiska museum (Swedish History Museum) in Stockholm. Parts of a chasuble are also kept at Skellefteå museum, but it can be seen in a picture at the back of the church.
The walls of natural stone with brick-ornamented gables form a hall church. The nave has three star vaults. The most richly decorated of these is found in the chancel.
