The church was built in 1989–1990 to designs by architect Bernt Gunnarsson, and was consecrated on 11 March 1990 by Bishop Per-Olov Ahrén. From the outset it was conceived as more than a place of worship, incorporating a hall known as Birgittasalen, a kitchen area, a sacristy and rooms for children's and youth activities alongside the main church space.
As Bunkeflostrand's population grew, the building underwent substantial renovation and remodelling between 2004 and 2005, following a design programme by architect Bo Svensson. The worship space itself was rotated an eighth of a turn and a small chancel added to the east. A glazed lantern was introduced into the roof, and the organ was relocated to a purpose-built recess to the north. New wings provided further parish offices, meeting rooms, a sacristy, and dedicated spaces for children's work and music. The renovated church, along with the adjoining Birgittagården parish house, reopened on 17 April 2005.
The reordering also brought new stained glass by Erland Forsberg into the worship space. Forsberg was also responsible for the altarpiece, a triptych in icon form from 1990 depicting the risen Christ enthroned in majesty — one of the church's most distinctive furnishings.
Other notable fittings include a font formed from a square wooden pillar veneered in lacquered beech, paired with a font bowl designed by glass artist Lars Hellsten and donated by the Orrefors glassworks. A triangular lacquered beech lectern (ambo) with an angled top surface stands nearby. The church bell, cast in 1990 at the M & E Ohlsson foundry in Ystad, hangs in a freestanding bell tower separate from the main building.
The organ, with nine stops across two manuals and pedal, was built in 1994 by Wilhelm Laukhuff Orgelteile in Germany, supplied by Kaliff & Löthman of Ålem, and inaugurated on 23 October 1994. Since 2014 the church has served as the parish church of Limhamn parish within the Diocese of Lund, and its Sunday services, noted for an evangelical-catholic character, are said to attract the largest regular congregation of any Church of Sweden parish in Malmö.
