Borgunda kyrka stands on the southern slope of Billingen, where several main roads converge, in the village of Borgunda. A church has existed on this site since the Middle Ages, though the present building dates from the 1760s and has since been substantially altered.

An earlier medieval church here featured carved sandstone blocks, including a relief thought to date from the 12th century. That building was destroyed in 1765 — sources differ slightly on the cause, with one account describing a fire and another a lightning strike — and the present church was built shortly afterwards, reportedly incorporating some material and fabric from its predecessor, particularly in the western section.

The church took its current appearance mainly from a major rebuilding between 1888 and 1890, when transepts, an apse and a tall tower with a spire inspired by Gotland church architecture were added. The rebuilt church was reconsecrated in 1891. Further restorations followed in the twentieth century: alterations around 1912–15 introduced a new altarpiece with paintings by the artist Eva Bagge, and electric lighting arrived in the late 1920s, when the roof covering was also replaced.

A more thorough renovation took place in 1936–37 under architect Axel Forssén, when the sacristy was relocated, central heating was installed, and the interior was substantially redecorated, including painting over a star-patterned ceiling in the chancel. A further renovation in 1968–69, led by architect Åke Hagman, altered the chancel floor and created a cloakroom beneath the gallery; during this work the star-ceiling motif in the apse vault was reinstated by the painter Alvar Johansson. The church tower underwent significant repair as recently as 2020.

Among the church's furnishings is a Romanesque font, said to have survived the eighteenth-century fire or lightning strike that destroyed the medieval church, along with a baroque pulpit and older items including a ciborium and a chandelier dated to the seventeenth century. The present organ was built in 1977, incorporating a case from the church's first organ of 1890; an older nineteenth-century harmonium is also said to survive in playable condition.
